Technology adoption will change employbility in Odisha

Below is the original press release:

It’s obviously not a very interesting scenario in Orissa with unemployment rates as high as 15 percent encompassing an average 2.6 lakh youth without job in hand. The stark scenario resembles the bleak picture of Bihar and North Eastern States considering the enrichment of resources in the state vis-à-vis the North Eastern regions. The figures have been put across by the 2014 Labor Bureau Report.

Furthermore, the facts are backed by the findings of Youth4work, a leading youth portal across the nation that has been aiding youth with their career ventures through self- assessing, improving and showcasing their talents. The statistics of the analysis conducted reveals that on an average, there are approximately 500 potential job seekers for every job posted for Odisha. The figure clearly depicts the stark imbalance between the available opportunities and the current workforce. Approximately, there are just 0.1% job opportunities in comparison to 1.7 % of total youth out there vying for these jobs.

Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha doesn’t offer very interesting statistics as regard the salary for the jobs in the city. In research conducted by Youth4work, the average salary for fresher/entry level position is a mere 2.1 lakhs, for mid level jobs, it’s 3.1 lakhs. The salary drifts between a minimum of 0.5 lakhs to a maximum 4.5 lakhs for entry level positions. As far as the mid level positions are concerned, the maximum salary is 4.5 lakhs while the minimum is 1.5 lakhs. It’s significant to mention that the total population of commerce graduates have high employment prospects as compared to their engineering, arts or science counterparts. B.Com is the most preferred educational qualification followed by B.SC, BA and MBA successively.

Mr. Rachit Jain, Founder and CEO, Youth4work shares in this context, “There is competitive youth talent potential available in Odisha that needs to be showcased aptly and equipped with avenues. Through Youth4work, we are trying to unleash this potential using technology by bringing them on the same platform along with other states and ranking them using various data points. Self-assessing tests — yTests — are certainly helping a lot of youth. We want companies to see and access this talent pool ranked on skills. We are also trying to tackle Employability by upskilling youth through various skill certification courses. ”

In the light of the above stated points, and looking at the dwindling rate of job creation in the state, youth will have to flock to platforms that recognize and help them improve their talent potential and match them with opportunities. Meanwhile, there is a great visible scope for few entrepreneurs to create employment opportunities and contribute to growth of Odisha. Those looking for job in the crunched market direly require upgrading their skills.
