With Firefox,

  • Always Ask (default value): Firefox will prompt you anytime a site tries to access your camera.
  • Allow: Websites will always be allowed to use your camera without asking for your permission (This setting can cause obvious privacy risks and should be avoided).
  • Block: No sites will be allowed to access your camera while this setting is active. Unblock to use camera.

With Chrome open, click or tap the menu at the top right. It’s represented by three horizontally stacked dots.

  • One quick way to get there is to hit Ctrl+Shift+Del and then hit Esc when that window appears. Then click or tap Content settings.
  • Choose Settings.
  • Scroll all the way down the page and open the Advanced link.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the Privacy and security section and choose Content settings.
  • Choose either Camera or Microphone to access either setting.

When a web page requests an image file to upload, you may choose to take a picture with your device’s built-in camera. If a site wishes to use your microphone for communication, you may choose to share that as well — such is the case with sites using WebRTC. Firefox will always display a message asking for permission each time a site asks to add a photo or record audio. It never records audio, takes pictures or records video unless you opt-in each time it asks.

With Chrome,

When you use an instant app, you can allow or deny permissions. To see what permissions an instant app has:

  1. On your device, open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Google>Instant Apps.
  3. Tap the app you want to see more about.
  4. Look under “Permissions” to see what permissions the app has.

Turn permissions on or off: You can change the permissions that apps can access in the main Settings app on your device at any time. Keep in mind turning off permissions may cause apps on your device to lose functionality.

Note: If you’re using a work, school, or government Google Account, your administrator may use the Device Policy app to control certain permissions.

With Safari,

Some websites may want access to your camera and microphone — sites like Facebook — and Safari would therefore need that access. You can completely deny it like this:

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Safari. You’ll have to scroll down to find it.
  3. Tap the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access. It’s down under Privacy & Security and turn on it.
