The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced will be managed by IIT Kanpur. This year, the selection criteria have changed in terms of age, educational qualification and number of JEE Advanced attempts.
Understand exam pattern
The JEE Advanced 2018 is going to be held online from this year onwards. The exam comprises two papers: Paper-I and paper-II, each of three hours’ duration. The exams will be held in two sessions and each of them is compulsory. The students have to meet the criteria in order to get selected for
the B.Tech course. If any candidate fails to meet the selection criteria, then he/she will be considered ineligible and hence will be rejected. It is mandatory for the students to qualify JEE Main 2018 by scoring a position among the top 2,24,000 candidates to take the JEE Advanced 2018.
Both paper-I and paper-II will have questions from three sections — physics, chemistry and mathematics. The marking scheme may have the concept of full, partial, zero and negative marks.
The questions will be MCQ type or objective and numerical in nature.
Brace for competition
For all aspirants preparing for the exam, it is extremely important to understand the competition they are facing, because ultimately they have to outshine others and grab a spot in JEE Main 2018 and then JEE Advanced 2018.
The percentage of various categories are OBC-NCL (27 per cent), SC (15 per cent), ST (7.5 per cent), and open category (50.5 per cent). Within each of these categories, reservation is available for PwD candidates.

Tips to help you excel
1. Maintain focus: Though Reasoning Ability is the key section (as you can attempt more questions quickly and has high cut-offs), you should prepare for all the three sections equally. Of course, you should attempt to your strength, but do not leave other sections behind.
2. Increase speed: Distribute your time well between all three sections. This can be done if you understand and improve the time you take to attempt each question.
3. Improve accuracy: With the application of learnt concepts, you need to keep improving your accuracy. Since the syllabus is expansive, it is tough to cover all areas equally few days before the exam. It is, therefore, necessary to go through important areas once more before the exam day. This will boost your confidence as well.
4. Take mock tests: Take as many mock practice tests as you can. This will improve your speed and accuracy.
5. Waste no time: When there is a little time left for the exam, which might very well change the course of your career, it is crucial to not to waste it. It will be beneficial if you can just fill the empty spaces of your next couple of days by memorising important formulae, years, concepts, etc.
6. Previous years’ papers: Though the exam mode has changed from offline to online, the assessment areas of candidates have not. Hence practice not only previous years’ papers, but also new question sets available in the market to get acquainted with as many question types as you can.
7. Build confidence: Often, unsteady nerves won’t let you perform well despite a good preparation. Hence, it is very important to be confident and steady before your exam. If it is hard to calm down, just try a few breathing exercises. This will help you relax.
